The Breast Care Center at Fletcher Allen Health Care is a comprehensive, multidisciplinary center for the evaluation and treatment of breast problems. The Breast Care Center is part of the Vermont Cancer Center.
Women who are seen at the Breast Care Center and identified by their provider as having an increased risk for developing breast cancer are offered individualized, consistent, state-of-the art, high-risk prevention and screening options.
Breast Cancer Prevention
All women are counseled by their provider about their individual risk for breast cancer and the most appropriate risk reducing options, which may include:
- Maintaining a healthy lifestyle (e.g., exercise, diet, weight control, limit alcohol consumption)
- Use of tamoxifen or raloxifene (for more information about the preventive benefits of tamoxifen and raloxifene review the National Cancer Institute’s Breast Cancer Prevention Studies)
- Prophylactic surgery (mastectomy and/or oophorectomy)
- Participation in clinical research trials on chemoprevention
Breast Cancer Screening
Providers at the Breast Care Center offer women with an increased risk for developing breast cancer a screening regimen based on their individual risk, needs, and preferences. Screening regimens may include the following:
- Periodic breast self-exam (BSE) is encouraged for all women starting in their 20’s
- Annual mammograms and a clinical breast exam (CBE) every 6 to 12 months are recommended beginning 10 years prior to the youngest breast cancer case in the family
- Breast screening with ultrasound or MRI may also be offered in addition to annual mammograms for some women at increased risk for developing breast cancer
